Castles and Gardens
Dunrobin Castle just north of Golspie is a huge romantic chateau on the sea's edge, home to the Dukes of Sutherland and visited by Queen Victoria. It is open to visitors from April to mid-October. The extensive formal gardens were laid out in 1850 beneath the castle. There is also a falconry display.
The Castle of Mey in Caithness, once summer home to the Queen Mother, is a long way from Shinness, but worth the journey.
In the ancient burg of Tongue, the garden of the Countess of Sutherland is also open by appointment with the gardener. Visitors can also walk to the ruins of Castle Varrich.
At Kylesku on the West coast a ferry runs to Kerrachar gardens, a stunning plantsman's garden and nursery beside the sea. The boat ride is an opportunity to see seals and puffins, and the gardens are a magnificent example of what can be achieved in the teeth of the Westerly gales. Open mid May to mid September Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and groups by appointment.
