Lain Introduction

For dramatic scenery, Northern Scotland cannot be beaten and Shinness Lodge is ideally placed for exploring the hills and lochs and the coastline with its huge cliffs and caves and miles of sandy beaches. To the East the pleasant towns of Dornoch, Golspie and Brora offer excellent golf courses, lovely beaches and good hotels and restaurants. Go north through the villages which were once home to the herring fishing fleets, then travel through the immensity of the flat Flow country and visit Bettyhill and Tongue, some of the most northerly towns of the British Isles. Experience the mysterious Smoo Caves, the vast beaches of the north coast and the windswept magnificence of Cape Wrath.

It's worth the walk to get to the golden, empty beaches of Sandwood Bay and Oldshoremore on the West coast and bird watchers will love Handa Island. Seafood at Kylesku Ferry Inn is as good as it gets and from the road along Loch More can be seen the hills of Foinaven and Arkle whose names were made famous by racehorses.
